What a Drag; Miss(ed) Gender(ed)
What a Drag; Miss(ed) Gender(ed) is a performance performed by Aleksi Moine and Anne Salmi that explores the history of drag culture, as well as domestic violence and non-binary gender identities, through improvisation and clown art. Within the performance the artists investigate their own experiences with gender prejudices by utilising comedic elements and the art of slapstick.
Moine’s and Salmi’s project will be performed after the holiday period, as the artists want to reach out to those people for whom the holidays might not be the happiest, nor the safest, time of year. What a Drag; Miss(ed) Gender(ed) will be performed at tapahtumatila Laituri, where everybody is welcomed to come and join a fun but an emotional journey.
Aleksi Moine (b. 1991 Paris) is a French-Finnish artist, whose practice revolves around bodily art, combining theatre and various styles of literature. Moine is a non-binary artist/activist for whom moving to Nordic countries meant liberation from France’s strict gender stereotypes. Moine also does drag under the moniker of Regina von Totenschmürz.
Anne Salmi (b.1985) is an artist/technician born in Siikajoki, Finland. For Salmi theatre and art are a language, a medium to begin conversations and express themselves, as well as a tool to widen perspectives and knowledge. Throughout Salmi’s life and career she has challenged traditional conventions and normalities, both through her artwork and in day to day life. Salmi states; “In art everything is possible and we are not prisoners of our bodies nor to the gender we were assigned to at birth. Neither are we forced to be only one entity, we are allowed to learn and experiment, to develop and be developed.”
What a Drag; Miss(ed) Gender(ed) on dragiä ja klovneriaa yhdistelevä esitys, jossa tutkitaan dragin historian merkityksen lisäksi muunsukupuolisuutta ja lähisuhdeväkivaltaa. Performanssin takana toimivat taiteilijat Aleksi Moine ja Anne Salmi, jotka ovat improvisaatio harjoitteiden kautta vieneet projektiaan eteenpäin Oulun taideresidenssiverkostossa Oulu-AiRissa. Esityksensä kautta Salmi ja Moine käsittelevät omia kokemuksiaan sukupuoliin rakennetuista ennakkoluuloista fyysisen komedian ja slapstickin keinoin.
Heidän projektinsa esitetään Tapahtumatila Laiturissa joulun aikaan, koska esityksellään taiteilijat haluavat tavoittaa heidät, joille joulu voi olla raskasta eikä koti ole välttämättä se turvallisin taikka hyväksyvin paikka. What a Drag; Miss(ed) Gender(ed) on performanssi, jonne kaikki ovat tervetulleita kokemaan hauskan, mutta tunteellisen matkan.
Aleksi Moine (s. 1991 Pariisi) on ranskalais-suomalainen taiteilija ja kehollisuuden tutkija, jonka praktiikassa yhdistyvät teatterin sekä kaunokirjallisuuden moninaiset eri tyylilajit. Moine on muunsukupuolinen queer artisti-aktivisti, jolle muutto Pohjoismaihin merkitsi vapautumista ranskalaisen yhteiskunnan edistämistä ahtaista sukupuolirooleista. Moine tekee lisäksi dragiä artistinimellä Regina von Totenschmürz.

Salmelle teatteri ja taide ovat kieli. Tapa aloittaa keskusteluja, ottaa kantaa ja tuoda tietoisuuteen erilaisia näkökulmia. Se ei rajoitu pelkäksi itsetarkoitukseksi tai pelkäksi välineeksi.
Koko työuransa ajan hän saanut ja joutunutkin haastamaan tututtuja konventioita niin työnkuvien sisällä ja rajapinnoissa. “Taiteessa kaikki on mahdollista, emme ole kehojemme tai oletetun sukupuolemme tai toimintakykymme vankeja. Eikä meidän tarvitse olla puhtaasti vain yhtä asiaa. Toimia vain yhdellä alalla, vaan saamme oppia ja kokeilla. Kehittää ja kehittyä.”
